Sioux City Community Schools celebrate graduates with virtual ceremonies
Saturday, May 23rd, was set to be a milestone for hundreds of Sioux City seniors.
It was high school graduation day.
But, those seniors didn’t get to celebrate with their classmates, instead, the Sioux City Community School District held virtual graduation ceremonies after COVID-19 canceled traditional celebrations.
Siouxland News spoke to two West High graduates about their unique graduation day.
“It was nice to be able to eat breakfast together, watch it, make jokes together and talk during it,” said Ally Hughes. “If we were to actually have a real graduation, then I would not have been able to sit with my family while all of it was going on, they would have had me just walk across the stage.”
For another graduate, the hat toss tradition was what she missed out on most.
“The past graduations that I have been too, people are spending more time together and there is much more happiness about it,” said Gwendolyn Rogers. “You get to do the typical hat throwing, so it kind of sucked to miss out on all that, but it was nice because it was on YouTube so we could pause it, have a discussion, and keep going.”
Each of the three high schools held virtual graduation ceremonies.
